‘The Death of a Gentleman’
Original oil painting. Signed and dated ‘Linden Travers 1939’ (lower left) oil on canvas.
The painting depicts a wonderful collection of a gentleman’s accoutrements and is not only skillfully painted, but can also be read as a withering assessment of a type of gentleman she must have socialised with.
Dimensions: 23 x 27 inches (58.5 x 68.5 cms)
Additional Notes: Florence Lindon Travers, better known as Linden Travers was one of the leading actresses of 1930s and 1940s British cinema. She is most famous for her role in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1939 masterpiece, The Lady Vanishes. She played both femme fatale and comedic roles. In 1962, along with her sisters Alice and Pearl she opened The Travers Gallery in Kensington. It only stayed open for three years but is evidence of how big a part art played in her life.
