Notes: Born on Sumatra, Engelhard returned to his parents’ native Germany where he studied in Munich with Franz von Stuck. Settling there and becoming a busy posterist and illustrator, he contributed to Simplicissimus and all the leading fashion magazines of this period. Stylistically, he’s out of the German mainstream of the period: softer, curvilinear, more pictorial, somewhere near Schnackenberg in his choice of themes and compositions, but with his own solutions to graphic problems.
