Italian Republic Motor Racing Trophy, 1947

An historically important Silver two-handled trophy cup, presented to Luigi Villoresi by the Italian President for his triumph in a Maserati Tipo 4CL in the 1947 motor racing event. The cup, with applied Maserati badge, and set on an ebonized base with ‘Il Presidente Della Repubblica’ plaque, is inscribed ‘Italia di Campionato 1947. Vincitore del primo posto Maserati 4CL, guidato da ‘Luigi “Gigi” Villoresi. Presentato da Enrico de Nicola il Presidente della Repubblica Italia’.

Additional Notes: Luigi ‘Gigi’ Villoresi (1909-1997) enjoyed consistent success on the circuits of Europe over almost three decades. He joined the Maserati team in 1938, winning the 1939 South African Grand Prix in a Maserati 8 CTF, and the 1940 Targa Florio in a Tipo 4CL.
Following the war and the resumption of motor racing, he immediately returned to his winning ways, taking victory in the first post-war GP, the 1946 Grand Prix de Nice. 1947 saw the most successful season for the Maserati Tipo 4CL, taking 10 individual race victories. The beautifully styled 4CL inspired artists, toy manufacturers, sculptors and model maker’s including Domo of Milan who produced the exquisite and sought after electric toy (see Ref: 3521 for more details) featuring a miniature ‘Gigi’ at the wheel!
