The Michelin guide was first published in 1900 by the famous French tyre manufacturers as a guide for French motorists, and was intended to boost the demand for cars, (thus for car tyres). The guide, given away free, contained useful information, including where to repair or change your tyres, and
the locations and details of hotels, and petrol stations. Today, the guide is far more famous for its starring system for fine dining establishments, the 3 stars, being the most coveted.
