‘Dornier DO-X’ a unique, one-off aluminium sculptural model of this iconic aircraft, the largest and most powerful flying boat in the world, when built in 1929. Powered by twelve 525 horsepower 12-cylinder in-line engines, the DO-X was intended to convey 66 passengers across the Atlantic at an altitude of 500 metres, in luxurious surroundings comparable to those of transatlantic liners. As with all John Elwell’s work, this magnificent sculptural model is a unique, one off, signed and numbered 1/1 to the plinth. The model has been constructed with a steel tubular space frame, over which hand formed aluminium panels are riveted and polished, the finished unique model taking over 500 hours to complete. Wingspan: 123 cms (48 inches).
