Roger Soubie (French, 1898-1984)

‘Bugatti Type 35’

An immensely rare, original first-edition poster, circa 1924. Commissioned personally by Ettore Bugatti himself from the young Roger Soubie and published as the front-cover illustration of ‘Omnia’ magazine, July 1927 issue. Printed by Imprimerie des Usines E. Bugatti, Molsheim, (Bugatti’s own in-house printers).

Size overall: 65½ x 50 inches (166 x 127 cm)

Illustrated: ‘Die Bugattis’, p. 405, and several other well-known reference works on Bugatti.

Due to the unfindable nature of original, first edition examples of this poster, even the Bugatti catalogue raisonné relies on an image of a reproduction. We are aware of only 5 other original examples of this poster by Soubie, all of which are in eminent private car collections.

This example originated from an older private collection in Europe, having been purchased by its previous owner, a fastidious collector of pre-war automobile art and sculpture, in Molsheim in the early 1950s. It presents in impeccable, original condition. All four margins are the correct size, denoting that it has not been trimmed, as is often the case. It has been carefully removed from its old linen-mounting and professionally and carefully cleaned.

After this arduous and painstaking process, it was then remounted by the world’s leading poster conservator on high quality, modern, archival-standard acid-free linen. The poster is framed in a plain black oak, conservation grade frame, and may be viewed at our gallery in St. James’s.

A unique opportunity.
