‘1931 German Grand Prix’

A masterly depiction of the victorious Mercedes-Benz SSKL of Rudolf Caracciola, in the closing stages of this gripping race at the Nurburgring. It was a 4-car duel, between Caracciola’s Mercedes-Benz, the Bugatti Type 51s of Chiron and Varzi, and Nuvolari’s Alfa Romeo Monza. Caracciola started in 4th place on the grid, gaining the lead when it started to rain – his preferred weather conditions. The rain eventually stopped, the track began to dry, and the opposition closed on the Mercedes-Benz. Entering Nurburgring’s long final straight the cars were in sight of each other, but the exhausted Caracciola managed to hold on and claim victory…a typically epic performance from the ‘Regenmeister’.
