Spitfire Desk, c. 1940

Price Code: SOLD

Reference: 5203

At first glance, a rather unremarkable office desk, but in fact a real rarity and a small piece of history – a circa 1940 desk, made of aircraft-grade aluminium by the apprentices at Supermarine’s works in Southampton, home of course to the legendary Spitfire fighter aircraft.

Such desks were used by the draughtsmen in the Supermarine Design Office at Hursley Park, near Winchester, known as ‘X Block’ – it is fascinating to speculate on what exactly may have been designed upon this austere black Rexine desk top, and what stories it could tell…

Hursley Park became the control centre of the Spitfire programme for the duration of the War, and Supermarine’s Design Office continued its operations there until 1957.

The perfect desk for the ultimate man-cave…

English, circa 1940.
