Saunders and Shepherd of Chester: A stylish set of Sterling silver salt and pepper pots in the form of an Edwardian motorist, in stylised motoring attire, with detachable heads for filling, and weighted circular bases, the design affectionately known as the ‘Mr. Popple’, each pot bearing makers marks for Saunders and Shepherd, and Chester hallmarks for 1908, with P.O.D.R. number 490421.

Height of each: 3½ inches (9 cms).

Additional Notes: The design of this novelty set recalls a brief moment in motoring history when drivers and passengers in their open cars wore pecially tailored motoring outfits complete with caps and goggles. The craze for special motoring garb was immortalised in popular media of the time, such as the number ‘The Motor Carnival’ in Mr Popple of Ippleton, a musical comedy
