'Peace for our time', 1938

A historically interesting commemorative cigarette box, applied with a cast silver, highlighted map of Europe with various locations indicated including London, Munich, Paris, Praha, Helsinki, and Moscou and featuring the inscription ‘Peace for our Time, London – Munich Sept 29 1938, Munich London Sept 30 1938’. The cedar lined interior with single, central divider has an engraved plaque 'To Lord Londonderry from his grateful passenger on a memorable flight G.W.P'. The box was presented by George Ward Price (1886-1961), the Daily Mail's celebrated foreign correspondent, to Charles, 7th Marquess of Londonderry, K.G., (1878-1949), to commemorate their flight to Munich at the time of the signing of the Munich Agreement with Hitler in September 1938. Ward Price was a graduate of Cambridge University, became a journalist and was eventually recruited by the Daily Mail as special foreign correspondent.

Because of the Daily Mail’s pro-Hitler stance at that time, he was welcomed by Hitler and afforded privileges not available to other journalists. A close friend of Oswald Mosley, he was a frequent visitor to Germany, including The Eagle’s Nest in Berchtesgarden.
