WMF icebuckets with a hunting theme, 1910

Two silver-plated Champagne buckets from the Edwardian era, circa 1910, made by foremost German manufacturers WMF (Wurtembergische Metallenfabrik).

Each bucket is profusely decorated with a frieze depicting hunting dogs in pursuit of wild boar, stag, hare and deer. The handles are in the form of antlers, the larger example with removable liner. WMF, founded in the 19th century, dominated the European and Russian markets for fine metal goods at the turn of the last century.

Growing very fast WMF acquired quite a few further companies such as AK & CIE (Albert Köhler und Cie), Orivit AG from Cologne and the ORION Kunstgewerbliche Metallwarenfabrik. Many famous artists and designers worked for WMF: Hans Peter, Albert Meyer, Rudolf Meyer, Herman Obrist, Albin Müller and last but not least also Peter Behrens.
