1958 F-4 Phantom II by John Elwell

Price Code: SOLD

Reference: 5832

John Elwell (English, born 1949).

A magnificent and unique very large-scale aluminium sculptural model of a 1958 Boeing F-4 Phantom II jet fighter. The body, constructed in Elwell’s signature style of hand formed aluminium panels riveted over a space frame, with cast aluminium pilots/crew and US Air Force decals and callsign 40673. With an applied plaque, signed John Elwell and numbered 1/1. English, 2014.

The F-4 was the U.S. Navy’s fastest, highest-flying and longest-range fighter. It first flew May 27, 1958, and entered service in 1961 and had top speeds more than twice the speed of sound.

The model fitted to an adjustable support, and set on a raised hardwood platform, with four splayed feet.

Wingspan: 37 inches (94 cms).

Overall height from floor: 70 inches (178 cms).

Length of plane: 60 inches (153 cms).

Note: the sculptural aluminium models of John Elwell are unique in their concept and construction, and unique in fact – each piece is a one-off, one of a kind, a limited edition of one example only, and takes around 1000 hours to hand-build.
