Arthur Court (American, 1928-2015)

A highly decorative and humorous Postmodern design wine cooler, or icebucket circa late 1980s, in the form of a kneeling elephant. Heavily cast and highly polished, the elephant’s head with polished brass tusks and red jasper gemstone eyes, hinges back to reveal a large space for a single bottle to be cooled, with the capacity for a large quantity of ice.

Hollywood interior designer Arthur Court, opened his design store in San Francisco in 1966, offering clients the opportunity to purchase his whimsical furniture and table top design pieces, including monkey candlesticks, palm tree glass-topped tables and ice buckets in the form of whales, rabbits or elephants, such as this one.
