'The Richfield Racer', 1917

A scarce promotional cigarette box in patinated bronze overlay made by The Richfield Oil Corporation, depicting a single-seater racing car in the style of a Miller being driven at speed. The car and driver lifts to reveal a void underneath, the plinth with impressed word RICHFIELD front and reverse, also features two recessed ashtrays to each end. Not made for retail, these promotional pieces were made in 1917 to commemorate the opening of the first Richfield gas stations, and were given to station owners, representatives and ‘friends of the house’. American, 1917.
