Alfred Dunhill

A set of three shagreen-wrapped silver-plated table lighters by Alfred Dunhill comprising the ‘Half-Giant’ (2 inches tall), the ‘Giant’ (4 inches tall) and ‘Giant Extra’ (6 inches tall) lighters, all with a fine, pale green shagreen covering and signed ‘Dunhill’ to the base and the lift-arm. English, circa 1930s.

Ernest Betjeman, father of the poet John Betjeman, was widely credited with the revival of the use of shagreen during the early part of the last century. A keen collector himself, Betjeman also produced many of the luggage fittings for Asprey & Co., who made shagreen highly fashionable in the 1920s and 30s.
