François Bazin (1897-1956), ‘Aviator’

Price Code: SOLD

Reference: 1780

A superb Art Deco sculpture of a First World War aviator, the stylized figure in full flying suit, helmet and goggles, looking down as he pulls on his gauntlets. French, circa 1930.

Height: 15 inches (38 cm).

The informed eye and keen artistic sensibility of François Bazin (1897-1956) are behind this prime Art Deco-influenced sculpture of a First World War aviator. Bazin deservedly won the Gold medal for sculpture at the 1930 Rome Exhibition for this inspiring bronze – one of only four examples of the work recorded.

Regarded as having created some of the most stylish Art Deco sculpture, Bazin was fascinated by speed and flight, and designed numerous car mascots which are highly sought-after today for ‘grandes marques’ such as Hispano-Suiza and Isotta Fraschini.
