'Prince Radziwill' by Bernard de Monvel, 1910

Bernard Boutet de Monvel (French 1881-1949) 'Portrait en pied du Prince Léon Radziwill au polo à Bagatelle, 1910'. An extraordinary Art Deco original oil on canvas, signed and dated 1910.

Dimensions: 36 x 30 inches (91 x 76 cms).

Additional Notes: Bernard Boutet de Monvel was a pupil of Luc-Olivier Mertson and first exhibited at the Salon des Beaux Arts in 1903. An associate of Paul Jouve, whom he accompanied to Salonica in 1915, he travelled extensively before settling in Morocco in 1925. Known for his society portraits, the subject of this portrait is Prince Léon Radziwill (1880-1927), scion of the Lithuanian Royal House and his mother, Louise Blanc, was heiress to the fortune created by her father who built the legendary casino in Monte Carlo.

Portrayed standing in the shade during a polo match at the Parc de Bagatelle in the Bois de la Boulogne in Paris in 1910, Radziwill was 30 years old and at the height of his prowess as a sportsman, automobilist and aviator. The painting was also created as a lithograph in an edition of 200 examples, entitled 'Le Joueur de Polo' in 1910, and was perceived at the time as being the epitome of 'l'Homme Moderne', at the same time elegant and sportive.
