'Icarus' by Colin George, c. 1920

A finely detailed showroom bronze depicting the mythical figure of Icarus standing on a rock, his arms outstretched with wings attached, ready for flight, signed, foundry marks, the bronze mounted on a square marble plinth, French c. 1920.

Additional Notes: This image of Icarus was commissioned by the pioneer French aviator, aeroplane manufacturer and automobile manufacturer, Henri Farman (1874-1958). A small version, some 7 inches tall, was used as the radiator mascot for Automobiles Farman, and this, the 30 inch version was cast in a small edition, probably six pieces only, for use as a display piece in Farman showrooms. A monumental, 6 metre tall version was erected in Paris in the 1920's, now sited opposite the Musee de L'Air.
