Additional Notes: The Mille Miglia (Thousand Miles) race was an open-road endurance race which took place in Italy between 1927 and 1957. Unlike modern-day rallying where cars are released at one minute intervals with the more powerful cars going before the slower cars, in the Mille Miglia, the smaller and less powerful cars started the race first. From 1949 cars in the race were assigned numbers according to their start time. For example, in 1955, this, the powerful 300 SLR was numbered 722, because it left Brescia at 7:22 a.m. whilst the first cars in the race has started at 9 p.m. the previous evening.
