‘Smokers Prefer Shell’.

Rare original advertising poster created for Shell Petrol and Oil in 1936. Conservation linen mounted and unframed.

Size: 30 x 45 inches (76 x 114 cm).

American artist and writer Charles Shaw was an early member of the American Abstract Artists group, founded in the year this poster was created. This design, clearly showing the influences of Cubism, inspired Shaw’s development into mixed media, assemblage and collage in the early 1940s.

Shell, known to pioneer the work of up-and coming artists, commissioned Shaw to create this poster in 1936. Shaw’s works are present in most of the world’s major public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, The Guggenheim and the Musée de l’Art Moderne in Paris, as examples of the best in American Abstract Expressionism.
